1.5.2020 part 3THE NORTHERN MOUNTAINS AND THE NORTHERN PLAINS (PART 3)

Good Morning Students
I hope you all have read and revised the topics discussed in the previous blogs.

We know that the Himalayas are divided into three parallel ranges:
  • The Greater Himalayas, called Himadri.
  • The Middle or Lesser Himalayas, called Himanchal.
  • The Outer Himalayas, called Shiwaliks.
Yesterday we learnt about Himadri and Himanchal in detail. Today we will learn about The Outer or Lower Himalayas, called Shiwaliks.

By the end of this class, you will be able to:

  • Compare the height, temperature, wildlife and population of Shiwalik with Himadri and Himanchal.
  • List the various crops grown in the Shiwalik region.
  • Understand and define words like scenic, inhabited and rearing.
THE OUTER HIMALAYAS
SHIWALIKS

  • Southernmost and lowest range of the Himalayas.
  • Shiwaliks is famous for the special scenic (beautiful natural scenery) valleys called duns.
For Eg:- Dehra Dun, Patti Dun, Kothri Dun and Pinjore Dun.
Look at the picture below. This is the Doon Valley in Uttrakhand.

  • Crops like ricepotato and maize are also grown in this region.

         POTATO                                                            MAIZE

  • In North India, the Shiwalik region is the end of mountains and the beginning of Plains.
  • In between the mountains and the plains, lies the Terai which is dense and marshy land (an area of low-lying land which is flooded in wet seasons and remains full of water at all times).
The picture below show Sugarcane growing in the Terai region.

Notes on Agriculture, Industry, Trade, Tourism, Transportations ...
  • Crops like rice, wheat and sugarcane are mainly cultivated here.
  • The Shiwalik hills is said to be the 'storehouse of Timber'.
Timber is a type of wood used in buildings and making furniture.
