Good Morning Students.
Welcome back to the Social Studies class.
I hope you all have read pgs-21,22 and 23.

Today we will discuss the Importance of Himalayas and Life in the Himalayas.

By the end of the topic, you will be able to:

  • List the various reasons why The Himalayas are important to us.
  • Appreciate the work done by people living in the Himalayas.
  • List  the Indian states situated in the Himalayas.

IMPORTANCE OF HIMALAYAS

We know that The Himalayas is a majestic (beautiful and powerful) mountain range and it is the highest and one of the longest mountain ranges in the world.

Let us now learn some more reasons why The Himalayas are important to us:

  • It forms a natural boundary between India and neighbouring countries like China.
  • It protects our country from the cold winds of the north.
  • It prevents the rain-bearing winds from leaving the country. This results in heavy rainfall in India.

  • The snow that melts from the Himalayas form rivers like the Ganga and the Yamuna.
  • These rivers are called perennial rivers because they have water throughout the year.

  • Many valuable products like Timber, resin (a sticky  substance, insoluble in water obtained from trees like fir and pine), medicines, etc., are obtained from the forests in this mountain range.

LIFE IN THE HIMALAYAS

Himachal Pradesh, India: Kullu Valley

Life is difficult in the mountains because of the following reasons:
  • Many places still do not have proper roads and connectivity to the outside world.
  • Only a few crops and fruits can be grown here.
  • During winters people have to adjust to the harsh weather conditions.
Many people earn their living by weaving carpets, carving wood and making woollen clothes.
